Dr Bird is the Director of Let Them Grow Organisation, a Not for Profit campaign to raise awareness of extreme preterm birth at the border of viability, and to raise funds for technology research to eradicate this condition.
Dr Bird has a Masters in analytical chemistry and PhD in biomedical science and more than 20 years of research experience and teaching in tertiary education. Formally, Dr Bird has worked in New Zealand in kidney research investigating the role of calcium signaling and antioxidant compounds in the inflammatory process. Dr Bird’s interest in developmental biology was inspired whilst working at the Hubrecht Institute, The Netherlands, in regenerative heart research. This theme continued in Australia and now focuses on fetal biology and extreme preterm birth.
Dr Bird holds an Honorary appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, The University of Melbourne, Australia and is a member of STC Australia and dedicated to finding solutions for preventable disease. Dr Bird is leading a campaign to build better technologies that will eradicate extreme preterm birth and its associated complications.
